Drawing ST-7 · Sheet 2 of 2

Specification ST-7.

The standard tube, described in full, for engineers, procurement officers and anybody else who has been unable to sleep.
Section 4

General description

The main tube is of drawn polycarbonate, wound along its length with a semi-voxelated ferrule to resist collapse under heavy geometry, and terminates at the user end in a matched pair of frustum sleeves set at the inter-pupillary distance. The two lateral hand tubes are coupled to the main tube by means of a quaternion grommet, giving six degrees of freedom and a seventh, which we have been asked not to discuss.

Return flow, comprising head position, hand position and a small amount of embarrassment, is carried back up the tube in a counter-rotating annulus, separated from the incoming world by a sub-Lambertian gasket so that the two do not mix. Where they have been allowed to mix, the user has seen themselves from behind, which is covered under Fault 3.5 and not on this site.

Ambient sound is admitted at the side by way of a binaural louvre, and is turned through ninety degrees on entry so that it appears to come from the correct direction. Smell is not supported, and has been the subject of a standing request since 1992.

Component tolerances

Tolerances are stated in millimetres. The cumulative figure is provided for completeness and should not be relied upon by anyone.

Component Tolerance (mm)
Polyhedral reflator, face count Plus one face, on older units 0.10
Quaternion grommet, seating Must be seated before rotation, never during 0.02
Latency baffles, perforation Larger holes are faster and more upsetting 0.50
Occlusion bung, fit A loose bung lets the back of the world in early 1.25
Frustum sleeve, taper See Part ST-7/5 regarding orientation 0.04
Sub-Lambertian gasket, compression Replace if you can see yourself from behind 0.30
Voice tube flap, hinge play Generous, so that it can be shut in a hurry 2.00
Thermal contraction, cold worlds Snow worlds draw the tube in slightly -0.75
Cumulative tolerance, all components 3.46

Tube required, by kind of world

Tube is supplied by the metre. The figures below are typical installations and are intended as a guide only.

Kind of world Tube (m)
Home world, unvisited Mainly for the clock 12.00
Quiet lobby Most of it coiled under the sofa 140.00
Busy club, Friday night Pressure-rated to eleven bar 4,096.00
Avatar world, 300 mirrors Each mirror requires its own return tube, which is why they are so dear to run 9,600.00
Horror world Two hundred metres of tube, ten of which go somewhere we have not been able to establish 210.00
World under construction Tube on order 0.00
